Henry plays for the Scottish League against the League of Ireland

and George Cruickshank score to give United a 2-1 win over Dumbarton
in the opening Division Two League game of the season at Tannadice.

After drawing 0-0 in the first leg at Gayfield, United win the
League Cup Play-Off to reach the quarter-finals, beating Arbroath
5-0 with goals from Archie Aikman, Jimmy Reid (2), Johnny Coyle
and Jim Coyle.

from Alloa Athletic just the week before, Dennis Gillespie makes
his United debut against St Johnstone at Tannadice.

After 5 years as manager of St Johnstone, legendary United striker

rivals in the space of a month, as United win a thrilling match

win the first derby of the season, with goals from Eamonn Bannon

of the League Cup as they lose the 2nd leg of the play-off with

the 1st leg of a League Cup quarter final match at Tannadice,
United beat Hamilton Accies 8-0 with goals from Jim McManus (2),

United beat St Johnstone 2-0 at Muirton Park with goals from Jim
Irvine and Tommy Campbell in their second First Division match
since promotion.
- 1977
Billy Kirkwood and Andy Rolland (penalty) score the goals that
give United a 2-0 win over Hibernian at Tannadice.
- 1983
Two goals each from Ralph Milne and Davie Dodds and another from
Billy Kirkwood give United an emphatic 5-0 victory over Hibs at
Tannadice.
- 1985
United defender Richard Gough plays as Scotland qualify for the
1986 World Cup in Mexico with a 1-1 draw with Wales in Cardiff
where Davie Cooper scores the vital equaliser, but in the end
its a sad day for Scottish Football as manager Jock Stein
tragically dies from a heart attack during the game.
- 1994 - New
signing Dragutin Ristic scores for United in a 1-1 draw with Motherwell
at Tannadice.
- 1996
After defeats to Dundee and Hearts, manager Billy Kirkwood leaves
the post after a poor start to the season. Chairman Jim McLean
appoints ex-Motherwell boss Tommy McLean as the new manager, and
it is the first time the two brothers have worked together at
the top level.

- 1965 - In
front of a crowd of 16,000 at Dens Park, United beat Dundee 5-0
with goals from Finn Dossing (3), Dennis Gillespie and a Lennart
Wing penalty. This game became known as the Dens Park Massacre
of 65.
- 1971 - A
high scoring Dundee derby at Dens Park sees Dundee win 6-4. United's
goals come from Alan Gordon, Andy Rolland (2) and a Doug Smith
penalty. This defeat brings Uniteds run of 11 derbies without
defeat to an end.
- 1976 - United
beat Celtic 1-0 at Tannadice, with Gordon Wallace getting the
winning goal.
- 1990 - Christian
Dailly becomes the youngest player ever to represent Scotland
at Under-21 level when he makes his debut against Romania at Easter
Road.

Andy McLaren header gives United a 1-0 win over Dundee at Tannadice.

first time in 6 years when they face Dundee at Dens Park, but

Horace Wooley scores twice on his United debut in a 3-0 win over
neighbours Dundee in a 2nd Division match at Tannadice, with Andrew
Meikleham also scoring in only Uniteds 2nd ever competitive
victory over the Dens Park club.

A remarkable 5-5 draw with East Stirling at Firs Park sees both
Tom McGairy and Johnny Coyle score twice, with Alan Massie scoring
from the penalty spot. This is Uniteds 4th score draw in
a row, all in the first 4 games of the season.
- 1960
In the first Dundee derby for 13 years, United beat Dundee 3-1
at Tannadice with two goals from Tommy Campbell and a Jimmy Briggs
penalty. Its the first time the clubs have met in the top
flight since 1939.
- 1980 - United
travel to Poland for their UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st leg tie, drawing
0-0 with Slask Wroclaw.
- 1983 - Goals
from John Holt and Davie Dodds give United a 2-1 win over newly

An amazing game at Tannadice sees United draw 5-5 with Arbroath,
with goals from Dave Sturrock (2), Wilson Humphries and Johnny
Coyle (2). Stewart Fraser plays as a trialist before signing for
the club shortly afterwards.

from Frank Munro (2), Finn Dossing (2) and Ian Mitchell give United
a 5-1 win over St Johnstone at Tannadice.
- 1974 - Paul
Sturrock makes his debut for United as he comes on as a substitute
for George Fleming in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1st round
tie against Jiul Petrosani of Romania. Goals from Jackie Copland,
Dave Narey and Pat Gardner give United a 3-0 lead after the 1st

Sturrock becomes the first Dundee United player to score a hat-trick
in European competition as United beat Bohemians of Dublin 5-2
in the UEFA Cup 1st round in Ireland. Eamonn Bannon also scored

Hafnarfjordfur in the 1st leg. Goals from Alex Cleland and Darren

Following promotion and major ground improvements at Tannadice,
United have their first ever meeting with Celtic, where United
win 1-0. The match is watched in front of a new ground record
of 20,000.

Tannadice by Belgium club Anderlecht in the 1st leg.
- 1984 - United
travel to Sweden for the 1st leg of their UEFA Cup 1st round tie
with Stockholm, losing the match 1-0.

Paul Sturrock makes his first major signing by bringing ex-Dundee
striker Billy Dodds to Tannadice from Aberdeen, with Robbie Winters
heading in the opposite direction.

goals from Craig Easton, Stephen McConalogue and David Hannah,
but Aberdeen finish the match as 5-3 winners, with ex-United front
man Robbie Winters scoring a hat-trick.

- 1985 - In
the 1st leg of the semi-finals of the League Cup, United go down

of the League Cup semi final at Tynecastle. United's Dave Narey
and Dave Bowman of Hearts both see red after a tussle.

Ian Mitchell becomes the youngest player ever to make a first-team
appearance for Dundee United when he makes his debut at the age
of just 16 years and four months, playing in a 5-0 win over Hibernian
at Tannadice. Dennis Gillespie, Walter Carlyle (2), George Pattie
and Jim Irvine are the scorers.
- 1979 - Ex-England
and Chelsea goalkeeper Peter Bonetti plays the last of his 7 matches
for United, aged 37, as United lose 4-1 to Morton at Cappielow.

- 1982 - United
travel to Holland for their UEFA Cup 2nd round 2nd leg tie with
PSV Eindhoven. Goals from Paul Hegarty and Billy Kirkwood take
United through after the 1-1 draw at Tannadice two weeks before.

Cup Winners Cup in the first round, losing the away leg 3-1 against

1st round tie in Switzerland is enough to take United through
to the 2nd round, after winning the 1st leg 3-2.
- 1975 - Goals
from Paul Hegarty, Henry Hall (2) and Paul Sturrock take United
through to the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup, as they beat IBV Keflavik
4-0 at Tannadice to win the tie 6-0 on aggregate.
- 1981 - Ralph
Milne scores as United lose 2-1 to Monaco at Tannadice in the
1st round of the UEFA Cup, but still go through to the 2nd round
after their extraordinary 5-2 victory in the 1st leg in Monaco.
This game was attended by Prince Ranier and Grace Kelly and will
forever be remembered for the immortal lines in Michael Marrs
song Hamish.

his last game for United, Billy McKinlay scores a hat-trick in
