A former Hibs S-Form signing, Addison was brought to Tannadice by Jim McLean from Lochee United at the age of 18, and made his first team debut the following season against Hibs at Easter Road. Playing in 28 games in his first four seasons, Addison became more of a first team regular from 1977 playing in over 30 matches over the next couple of seasons. In 1979/80, Addison played in 3 League Cup matches in United's run to their first ever trophy win, and played in both legs of the UEFA Cup 1st Round tie against Anderlecht. He also played his part as United retained the League Cup the following season, playing in 5 matches and scoring against Motherwell in the 3rd Round. After playing in the first match of the 1981/82 season, Addison was part of a *joint transfer deal that took him and Willie Pettigrew to Hearts.
