Beedie was signed before the start of the 1984/85 season from relegated St Johnstone, and scored 3 goals in his first 2 games, including one on his debut at Parkhead and 2 against Forfar in the League Cup. In his first season with United, Beedie played as a substitute for Ralph Milne in the 1984 League Cup Final against Rangers, and was in the starting eleven for the UEFA Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Beedie was also a major player in United's run to the 1985 Scottish Cup Final, scoring in the Semi-Final Replay win over Aberdeen as well as United's goal in the Final against Celtic. In 1985/86 Beedie was in and out of the first team, but scored the winner against Hibs in the final game of the season before joining the Edinburgh club in a joint deal with Billy Kirkwood.
