Armand Benneker
Defender

United Debut: v Motherwell (H) 1-1 10/8/96.

Signed From: MVV Maastricht (Holland) 9/8/96.

Transferred to: Freed May 1997.

Armand Benneker arrived at United in the summer of 1996 on a Bosman following the club's quick fire return to the Premier League via the play-off. He was signed from Dutch side MVV Maastricht, coming with high hopes of a central defensive partnership with the by then well-established Steven Pressley. He made his debut against Motherwell in the first home game of the season, which ended in a 1-1 draw courtesy of a Gary McSwegan header. He played in eight more games that season - his last as a substitute in a 1-0 home win over Aberdeen - and was never seen in a tangerine jersey again. Armand left the club the following summer following a period of niggling injuries. It was rumoured in some quarters that United were duped when they initially signed the player, and when new manager Tommy McLean came in after just 2 months of the 96/97 season, Benneker never saw the first team again.
