Bollan made a name for himself during the U-16 World Cup in Scotland in 1989 as Scotland reached the Final, and was the first of the 5 United players in that squad to make it into United's first team. A fast attacking left-back with one of the longest throw-in's in Scottish football, Bollan was up against Maurice Malpas for the left-back position, so was played more in midfield, and scored twice against Dundee at Dens in 1992/93, once in a 3-1 win where he was also sent off, and again 4 months later in a 4-0 win. Bollan played in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final Replay against Aberdeen the following season and was an unused substitute in the Final against Rangers. Half way through United's struggle with relegation the following season, Bollan left for Ibrox in a *joint deal with Alex Cleland, but after spells at St Johnstone and Livingston, returned to Tannadice for a spell in 2003.
