After spells at Hearts and Coventry City, Bowman joined United *in a joint deal with Jim McInally in the summer of 1986, and by the end of his first season was involved in the UEFA Cup Final. Starting of as a midfielder, "Psycho" spent a couple of seasons playing at right-back in the late 80's, but returned to United's midfield and, after 3 Scottish Cup final defeats against St Mirren, Celtic and Motherwell, eventually won a winners medal as United won the trophy for the first time in 1994. After relegation the following season, he helped the club back to the top league in 1996, and was the ball winner in midfield for Tommy McLean's Scandinavian era. The kind of hard-tackling, no nonsense midfielder that every team should have, Bowman didn't score that many goals, but when he did they were usually belters!
