Jimmy Briggs
Defender

United Debut: v. Brechin City (A) 2-1 Aug 1955.

Signed From: St Marys Boys Club June 1955.

Transferred to: Montrose (Free Transfer) Sept 1970.

Briggs was signed by Reggie Smith from St Marys Boys Club, and saw 4 managers come and go in his first 4 seasons at Tannadice. He missed out on most of his early career due to National Service. Although he missed the Promotional game against Berwick in 1959 due to injury, Briggs played a vital role in the promotion, scoring a penalty in the 2-1 win against Falkirk the week before, his first goal for the club. Briggs and Tommy Millar were United's full-backs for the majority of the 60's, Jimmy missing fewer than 20 games over the next 7 seasons, and played their part in United's first European matches against Barcelona and Juventus in 1966/67. Team captain and regular penalty taker for a spell, Briggs broke his leg in a Scottish Cup match in 1968, and again the following season, and was given a free transfer in 1970 after 15 years at Tannadice.
