Signed along with Gerry Henron and Walter Smith from junior club Ashfield by Jerry Kerr in 1967, Cameron spent his first two years at Tannadice as a part-timer as he completed an apprenticeship as a printer. Injuries to Tommy Millar and Jimmy Briggs gave Cameron a run in the first team, and eventually took over at left-back for the next 4 years. Jim played in both legs of the Fairs Cup match against holders Newcastle in 1969, and against Grasshoppers and Sparta Prague the following year. Cameron's only goal for United came in a Christmas Day 3-2 win over Dunfermline at Tannadice in 1971. As Frank Kopel came into the team, Cameron left for a spell at Falkirk, before joining former team mate Kenny Cameron at Montrose, then Archie Knox at Forfar before emigrating to Australia in the early 80's.
