After a successful spell at Bolton Wanderers, the ex-Airdrie striker was signed by manager Billy Kirkwood to bolster the club's strike force for their battle to get back to the Premier Division. Coyle scored on his debut the following day and made an appearance in every game during the remainder of that season. Coyle scored 2 goals in a tough midweek Scottish Cup match down at Berwick that season, and also scored at Parkhead as United looked to have knocked Celtic out of the quarter-finals, until Celtic came back with 2 late goals. Coyle scored the goal that took United back to the Premier League, netting in extra-time during the Play-Off with Partick Thistle, a goal he will aways be remembered for by Arabs. After a handful of appearances the following season, he was involved in a player swap deal that brought Jamie Dolan to Tannadice. Coyle returned briefly under Ian McCall in 2003, but returned to his first club Airdrie a year later.
