The ex-Montreal Impact defender became manager Paul Sturrock's second major signing when he joined from Darlington for £400,000 in October 1998 and made his debut a week later. De Vos spent the rest of that season in the heart of United's defence alongside Maurice Malpas as Sturrock continued to rebuild the team. The following season he missed only 4 matches and it was during this season that he scored his only goals for the club, once in a 4-1 defeat against Rangers at Ibrox and again in a 3-1 win against Motherwell at Fir Park. In 2000/01 he again missed only a handful of matches and formed a solid partnership with Jim Lauchlan as Alex Smith's side battled to survive relegation. De Vos left for Wigan at the end of that season. While at United, De Vos captained the Canadian international team to Gold Cup success in 2000, and scored in the final against Colombia.
