Neil Duffy
Defender/Midfielder

United Debut: v Motherwell 10/8/96.

Signed From: Dundee £200,000 6/8/96.

Transferred to: Ayr United May 1999.

Brought up in South Africa, Duffy was signed by United in 1985 but returned home soon after suffering from homesickness. He was given a second chance however when he again signed for the club in December 1989, but was transferred to Falkirk a year later without playing a first team game. Manager Billy Kirkwood brought Duffy back to Tannadice after the player had spent 2 years at Dundee, and he finally made his United debut at the start of the 1996/97 season. However Duffy found it hard to break into the consistant defence of Malpas, Pressley, Perry and Pedersen, and was used more as cover and in midfield. Duffy scored twice for United, once in a 2-1 home defeat to Raith Rovers in 1996, and again in a 3-0 win over Clydebank in 1999. Most of his time at Tannadice was blighted by several injuries and he was freed at the end of the 1998/99 season, later signing for Ayr United.
