George Fleming
Midfielder

United Debut:

Signed From: Hearts, £10,000 Jan 1972.

Transferred to: St Johnstone as player/coach 9/7/80.

Fleming became the first player Jim McLean paid a transfer fee for in 1972, adding his experience to the squad as young player's like Narey, Payne, Holt and Gray came through from the Youth Academy. The hard working midfielder was a major part of United's transition through the 70's, from the Scottish Cup Final defeat against Celtic in 1974 to the club's first ever trophy win, the League Cup in 1979. In the days when Hamish McAlpine took the penalties, it was Fleming's job to prevent the opposition keeper from releasing the ball quickly, giving Hamish the chance to rush back to his goal! Left to become player/coach at St Johnstone in 1980 and later became manager of Arbroath. Fleming wore white football boots before they were fashionable!
