Fraser was signed by manager Tommy Gray and made his debut against Brechin City a few days later. After his first season, Fraser was called up for National Service and was eventually posted to Dover, and appeared for the local team in the Southern League after United arranged for a temporary transfer. Fraser was later posted to Edinburgh, which gave him a chance to turn out for United during the clubs run to promotion in 1960, and became a full-time player the following season. The wing-half became an important part of the team, missing only 10 League games over the next 4 seasons, and won two League caps playing for the Scottish League in the 4-3 win over the English League and scoring a hat-trick in the 11-0 win over the League of Ireland. Fraser broke his leg half way through the 1964/65 season, and only played in another 16 matches after losing his place to Lennart Wing, and was eventually freed at the end of the 1966/67 season.
