Breaking his ankle in training just days after his debut at Ibrox on the opening day of the 1987/88 season summed up most of French's career at Tannadice. Every time he got a decent run in the first team, he would pick up an injury and miss a month or more. French twice scored the winner against Dundee, at Tannadice in 1988 and at Dens the following season, also coming off the bench to score a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Celtic the same season. He scored 2 goals against Airdrie at Tannadice on the way to the 1991 Scottish Cup Final, and played against Motherwell in the Final, one of United's better performers in another disappointing Hampden result, but then left for Dunfermline five months later.
