Gallacher made his debut in a European tie in 1985, and scored his first goal for the club in a 4-2 win over Celtic at Tannadice that season. He made his impact on the first team during the UEFA Cup run the following season, scoring that wonder goal in the 2nd minute of the match against Barcelona at Tannadice, and scored in 7 straight League games, finishing the season as second top scorer with 16 goals. A lightening fast striker/winger, Gallacher scored some fantastic goals for United, one being against Celtic in the 1988 Scottish Cup Final, and had a habit of scoring against the Glasgow club, scoring 7 goals aganst them in his time at Tannadice. He scored two hat-tricks in his time at Tannadice, against Dunfermline and Hamilton, both away from home. Gallacher left United in 1990 for the top flight in England with Coventry, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle.
