Gallacher came up through the ranks at Tannadice and was Paul Sturrock's third choice keeper behind Alan Combe and Pat Onstad in 1999, and was loaned out to Airdrie for 3 months. He returned to the club and made his first team debut at McDiarmid Park, his only appearance that season. As Alex Smith came in and rebuilt the team the following season, Gallacher was given his chance after Combe's sending off at Easter Road, and was a major player in United's escape from relegation that year. Gallacher remained in goal for over two years, his form winning him international recognition, but a dip in form during the 2002/03 season saw Combe back in contention as Ian McCall became manager. After a bad start to the 2003/04 season, Gallacher again lost his place, this time to Tony Bullock, but an injury to the new keeper saw Gallacher back in goals, and he helped United climb to their 5th spot finish before leaving for Norwich City when his contract ran out.
