Griffin was brought to Tannadice by manager Paul Sturrock during the close season of 2000, but due to injury, it took Griffin 5 months to make his United debut. In this time Sturrock had left the club and was replaced by Alex Smith but United had slipped to the bottom of the table. After his debut at Tynecastle, Griffin stayed in the first team for the remainder of that season, and helped to turn things around, helping United reach the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup and survive relegation. Griffin played in the memorable comeback against St Johnstone in the second last game of the season that kept United in the Premier League. Griffin became club captain and missed only 11 matches the following season, and scored fantastic free-kicks against Dumbarton and Hibs as United finished 8th in the League. Injury struck again as Griffin missed most of the 2002/03 season, and half way through the 2003/04 season he left for Stockport County after losing his place.
