Billy Hainey
Forward

United Debut: v Motherwell 5-1 19/3/66.

Signed From: Partick Thistle March 1966.

Transferred to: St Mirren July 1968.

After a dip in the teams form during the second half of the 1965-66 season, Jerry Kerr brought Hainey from Partick Thistle just before the transfer deadline, and his arrival helped United climb to fifth spot in the League and a place in the following seasons Fair Cities Cup, scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over Rangers at Tannadice in the process. In United's first ever European tie, against Barcelona, Hainey became the first ever United player to score a goal in European competition, putting United 1-0 up after just 13 minutes at the Nou Camp. Taking a 2-1 lead back to Tannadice, Hainey added to Ian Mitchell's goal with a stunning 30 yarder to finish off the then holders of the trophy. Hainey also scored in a 4-4 draw against Falkirk at Tannadice, in a 3-2 win over an "unstoppable" Celtic at Parkhead, and in the classic Scottish Cup match against Hearts that ended 5-6.
