United famously won the League in 1983 with a core squad of 13 players, and this was mainly due to the versatility of John Holt and Billy Kirkwood, with nearly every position in the team covered between the two of them. The Dundee born defensive midfielder played his part in all of United's successes in the 80's with his no-nonsense attitude and commitment. Holt broke into the first team in 1974 along with the likes of Narey and Gray, and made regular appearances in midfield or defence for the club until 1987, when he left for Dunfermline. Holt returned to Tannadice in the mid 90's and spent several years in many coaching roles. More renouned for his ball-winning than goal-scoring, Holt pitched in with a couple of goals each season, but managed a hat-trick during the League winning season in a 5-0 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
