United Debut: .

Signed From: Whitburn Juniors 1959.

Transferred to: Middlesborough £25,000 1964.

Manager Jerry Kerr beat Manchester United and Burnley to the signing of 16 year-old Irvine, and his partnership with Denis Gillespie played a major role in United's promotion to Division 1 in 1960, scoring over 40 goals between them. Irvine scored a late winner against Falkirk in the second last match of that season to set up United's chance in the final match against Berwick at Tannadice. Irvine scored 39 goals over the next 3 seasons, including the winner in a 2-1 victory over Rangers at Tannadice in 1962, as United cemented their place in Division 1, and played in the clubs first ever Scottish Cup Semi Final against Rangers at Hampden. His goal tally of 12 in season 1963/64 took his total to 76 goals in 158 matches, an average of a goal every other game, and he left for Middlesborough at the end of the season. He returned to Scotland with Hearts, and scored their winner in the classic 6-5 Scottish Cup match at Tannadice in 1968.
