Jackson was brought back to Scotland from Newcastle in 1988, but his debut against Celtic lasted only 4 minutes when he went off due to an injury and he missed the remainder of the season. The following season Jackson was switched from midfield to striker and ended the season pushing Mixu Paatelainen as top scorer. During the next two seasons Jackson had successful striking partnerships with Christian Dailly then Duncan Ferguson, and scored some vital goals for the club, including a couple of winners against the Old Firm and the last minute equaliser against Motherwell in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final to take the game into extra-time. Left the club in 1992 for Hibs and then Celtic, but was never as lethal as he was at Tannadice.
