After spells at Forfar and St Mirren, Knox was one of Jim McLean's first batch of signings as United manager, and along with Fleming, Kopel and Gardner, their experience helped youngsters like Narey, Gray and Holt as they made their way into the first team. Signed half way through the 1971/72 season, Knox played in 11 matches scoring 4 goals, and was again on the periphery of the first team the following season. He became a regular during the 1973/74 season, and played in the clubs first ever Scottish Cup Final against Celtic at Hampden. Knox only played occasionally over the next two seasons, although he played in European matches against Juil Petrosani, Bursapor, Keflavik and Porto, and was freed at the end of the 1975/76 season. Knox went on to become manager of Forfar and Dundee, and was assistant manager to Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen and Manchester United, and to Walter Smith at Rangers and Everton.
