Malpas broke into the United first team in 1981, and remained there in United's defence for nearly 20 years, the prime example of a one club player, probably the last of his kind. For the first couple of years of his football career, Malpas remained a part-time player as he completed his Degree in Electrical Engineering, and during this time he was involved in United's continuing rise as European contenders and League Champions. Mo holds the all-time record of League appearances for the club, is United's most capped player (entered in the SFA's Hall of Fame), was voted Scottish Football Writers' Player of the Year 1990-91 and in 1994 became the first United captain to lift the Scottish Cup. An outstanding servant to the club, Mo became Player Coach in 1991 and then First Team Coach in 2000.
