After Gary McSwegan's departure to Hearts in October 1998, manager Paul Sturrock brought in Alex Mathie to partner Billy Dodds up front, and in his 2nd game he scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle. Three games later he scores in a 2-1 defeat at East End Park, but that was the end of his scoring touch as he played a further 23 times that season without finding the net. The following season Mathie only appeared 17 times for the club after spending time out on loan at Preston North End, but still added 4 goals to his tally, including two in a 2-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle. After Paul Sturrock's resignation at the start of the following season, the former Newcastle striker was freed by United after scoring 6 times in 50 appearances, and signed for York City a few days later. |
