After his heroics in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final for Motherwell against United, Maxwell signed for Walter Smith's Rangers in 1992, and played a major role in United's winning goal in the 1994 Cup Final. Just over a year later, United manager Billy Kirkwood brought Maxwell to Tannadice as he rebuilt the team for the fight out of the First Division, and he missed only 2 League games that season. Maxwell played in both legs of the dramatic Play-Off against Partick Thistle that took United back to the Premier Division. He started the following season as first choice keeper but lost his place due to injury after 12 games. New manager Tommy McLean brought in another ex-Motherwell goalkeeper, Sieb Dykstra, and he remained in goal for the rest of that season, and the whole of the following season. During the close season of 1998 Maxwell signed for Greenock Morton.
