United Debut: v Dundee (H) 2-1 8/4/89.

Signed From: S-Form 12/8/86.

Transferred to: Luton Town 28/7/98.

McKinnon made his debut for United when Jim McLean played him from the start in a Dundee derby at the tail end of the 1988/89 season. After 11 matches the following season, McKinnon became more of a regular in the side during the 1990/91 season, scoring in a 2-1 win over Celtic at Tannadice, scoring in a 3-1 Scottish Cup quarter-final game against Dundee and playing in the Final against Motherwell at Hampden. After 25 games and 4 goals during the 1991/92 season, McKinnon was bought by Brian Clough's Nottingham Forrest for £750,000. After a spell at Aberdeen, McKinnon was re-signed by Billy Kirkwood and played in the second half of the 1st Division season, including the play-off against Partick Thistle. During Tommy McLean's time as manager, McKinnon scored the winner in United's first victory at Tynecastle in 12 years, and scored an incredible hat-trick of free-kicks against Kilmarnock in a 3-2 win. McKinnon rarely played the following season, and left for Luton Town.
