United Debut: v. Dumbarton (A) 0-1 7/10/95.

Signed From: Notts County £350,000 6/10/95.

Transferred to: Hearts 7/10/98

Ex-Rangers striker McSwegan was brought to Tannadice by manager Billy Kirkwood during United's season in the 1st Division and went on to score 17 goals as United made they're way back to the Premier Division. During United's first season back in the top league, McSwegan scored 9 goals, including a fabulous last minute winner against Celtic at Tannadice, as Tommy McLean rebuilt the team as United qualified for Europe once more. He became only one of 3 United players to score a hat-trick in Europe with a treble against CE Principat in Andorra, and did it again in the home leg as United won 17-0 on aggregate. McSwegan also scored a superb winner at Ibrox that knocked his old club out of the League Cup, and finished that season with 17 goals. In 1998/99 a great strike partnership looked to be blossoming after the signing of Billy Dodds, but McSwegan left for Hearts under freedom of contract.
