Millar was signed by Jerry Kerr at the tail end of the 1961/62 season, and was United's right-back throughout the 60's, missing only a handful of games over the next 6 years. Millar was part of a consistant United defence, along with Jimmy Briggs, Doug Smith and Tommy Neilson, and they played their part in United's rise, helping United reach the Semi Finals of the Scottish Cup for the first time in 1963, their first League Cup Semi Final in 1964, and took the club to their first European matches against Barcelona and Juventus in 1966/67. Tommy's brother Jimmy joined United the following season, but that year also saw Tommy stretchered off with a broken leg in the classic 5-6 Scottish Cup match with Hearts. Millar came back from injury the next season to play another 15 times, but was freed by United by the end of the season.
