Ex-Rangers midfielder Miller was signed by Alex Smith as United sat adrift at the bottom of the table, and along with other new signings Derek Lilley and Jim Lauchlan, made a huge difference to the team, with only 3 League defeats from the turn of the year and a place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. Miller scored one of the goals in United's fight back against St Johnstone in the second last game of that season to guarantee the club's Premier League survival. Although his form fluctuated over the next two seasons, the skillful midfielder became such a vital part of the team that United weren't the same without him. He scored against Dundee twice during the 2001/02 season, and again scored important goals against Motherwell and Livingston to keep United off the bottom spot as Ian McCall took over during the 2002/03 season. Miller was outstanding during the following season, but never got that deserved second Scotland cap, and left for Norway for a new challenge.
