United Debut: v Hibernian (H) 5-0 29/9/62.

Signed From: Woodburn Athletic 18/7/62.

Mitchell became the youngest player ever to make a first-team appearance for Dundee United when he made his debut in 1962, aged just 16 years and four months. In his first full season Mitchell finished as United's leading scorer with 15 goals and went on to finish as the club's top scorer in seasons 1966/67 and 1969/70, eventually scoring over 100 League goals for the club, one of only five players ever to do so. Mitchell scored in the 2nd Leg of the 1966 Fairs Cup match against Barcelona at Tannadice, as United won 4-1 on aggregate in their first ever European tie. After playing against Newcastle United in the Fairs Cup in 1969/70, Mitchell signed for the English club on the eve of the following season, for what was then United’s record fee of £50,000 and ironically, made his debut at Tannadice in a pre-season friendly. He returned to Tannadice in 1971, Jerry Kerr's last signing as United manager, and stayed until 1973 when he returned to his hometown, Falkirk.
