Three months into United's first season back in Division 1 for 28 years, manager Jerry Kerr signed 33 year-old veteran centre forward Mochan from Celtic to add experience to the team's strike force. Mochan had been at Parkhead for 8 years and had picked up League, Scottish Cup and League Cup winners medals, as well as appearing in the 1954 World Cup Finals in Switzerland with Scotland. Mochan had an instant impact, scoring twice on his debut in a 4-2 defeat to Kilmarnock, and went on to score 14 times in 24 matches as United cemented their place in the top flight with a 9th place finish. United again finished in the middle of the table the following season as Mochan scored 16 goals to finish as the clubs second top scorer. In season 1962/63, Mochan played in the clubs first ever Scottish Cup Semi Final at Hampden at the age of 36, and was freed at the end of the season. |
