Transferred to: St Johnstone £100,000 2/8/94.

O'Neil broke into the first team along with Paddy Connolly at the end of the 1988/89 season, and made ocassional first team appearances until the latter stages of the 1990/91 season where he missed only 1 of the last 16 matches. In the 1991 Scottish Cup Final against Motherwell, he came on as a sub for Duncan Ferguson and turned the game in United's favour for a while, scoring his first goal for the club in the process. A small, pacey winger, O'Neil's best season at United was in 1992/93 where he played in 32 matches and scored 4 goals, including the winner against Partick Thistle at Tannadice in a 2-1 win. O'Neil played in only a handful of games the following season, scoring in a 1-1 draw at Tynecastle and playing in both games against Airdrie in the Quarter Final of the successful 1994 Scottish Cup run, before leaving for St Johnstone.
