United Debut: v. Partick Thistle (H) 1-0 LC 16/8/89.

Signed From: Newcastle United £350,000 15/8/89.

Jim McLean tried to bring O'Neill to Tannadice in 1987, after he played against United in a UEFA Cup match for Coleraine, but lost out to Newcastle United. Two years later O'Neill came to Tannadice in a then record transfer fee, and made an instant impact, scoring on his debut and going on to score 7 goals in his first 14 games for the club. He then disappeared from the first team by the second half of the season, and didn't appear in the first team much the following season, playing in only 17 games with no goals. O'Neill started season 1991/92 with a bang though, scoring 4 goals in the first 4 matches, but was then out for nearly a year with glandular fever. He returned for the 2nd half of the following season and became a regular in the starting eleven, but just as he was finding his form again, O'Neill left for Hibs before the start of the 1993/94 season.
