Phillip was part of the Dundee League Cup winning team in 1973, and after joining United in 1978 he completed his personal hat-trick by helping United win the trophy in 1979 and again the following year, beating his old club 3-0. Phillip also played in many of United's European matches in the early 80's, including the 5-2 vicory in Monaco in 1981, and played in the 1981 Scottish Cup Final and a third consecutive League Cup Final in 1981/82, both against Rangers. Scored his only goal for United in a 3-0 win against Aberdeen at Pittodrie . Was more or less a first team regular up until the year United won the League, and moved on in 1983/84 to Raith Rovers where he finished his career.
