Preston made his debut for the club at the end of the 1987/88 season, and played in the two games leading up to the 1988 Scottish Cup Final against Celtic. The following season he played in 10 matches, including 2 of United's European Cup Winners' Cup matches, and scored his only goal for United in a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. On his day Preston was an exciting, attacking winger, and in one particular match at Ibrox in 1990 where Rangers won 3-1, he ran Gary Stevens ragged for the entire match. Over the next two seasons, Preston only appeared on 10 ocassions, and after 2 substitute appearances in the League Cup in 1992/93 he was involved in a player swap deal that took him to Tynecastle, with Scott Crabbe heading to Tannadice.
