Alex Reid
Midfielder

United Debut: v Dunfermline (A) 2-3 LC 10/8/68.

Signed From: Rangers 3/7/68.

Transferred to: Newcastle (player swap) Oct 1971.

Signed by manager Jerry Kerr during the close season of 1968, Reid made his debut in the opening match of the 1968/69 season, and was a regular in the side for the next three seasons. In 1970/71 Reid played in United's European matches against Grasshoppers, scoring in the 1st Leg at Tannadice in a 3-2 win, and also played in the next round against Sparta Prague. This was probably Reid's best season at Tannadice, playing in 44 matches and scoring 8 goals, including one at Ibrox for a 1-1 draw with Rangers, and another in a 3-2 win over Dundee at Dens Park. Reid started the 1971/72 season well, scoring 3 times in the opening 7 matches in the League and the League Cup, but in October he was involved in a player swap deal that brought Ian Mitchell back to Tannadice, with Reid heading for Newcastle. He returned to Scotland a year later, and played for Morton before returning to Tannadice for a spell, before having to retire due to a knee injury whilst playing for Ayr in 1977.
