A Fifer through and through, Rolland spent his early career with Cowdenbeath and Dundonald Bluebell, before joining United in 1967, and spent the next 11 years as a regular full-back at Tannadice. Rolland played in United's Fairs Cup matches of the late 60's/early 70's against the likes of Newcastle, Grasshoppers, Sparta Prague & Porto, and made an appearance in the club's first ever Scottish Cup Final in 1974, coming on as a substitute for Graeme Payne. Was selected for The Scottish League team against The Football League at Hampden in 1976. In 1978 Rolland was given a free transfer due to his services to the club, and left to play in America during the "soccer" boom of the late 70's with the likes of George Best, but returned to Scotland to play for Dunfermline and eventually became manager of Cowdenbeath.
