Brazilian Sergio Heneriques Gomes was brought to Tannadice by manager Ivan Golac half way through the 1994/95 campaign as the team failed to live up to expectations after winning the Scottish Cup the season before. He made his debut in the emphatic 6-1 win over Motherwell at Tannadice, and scored his first goal for United in a 2-0 home win over Partick Thistle. Sergio scored the goal he will always be remembered for by United fans with a fantastic solo effort against Hearts in the Scottish Cup, but United lost 2-1 in what turned out to be Golac's last game in charge. By this time United had been sucked down into a relegation dogfight and the Brazilian's fancy touches and skill became a luxury in the battle for survival. United lost all but one of their last 7 games and were relegated, and manager Billy Kirkwood deemed Sergio surplus to requirements for the battle for promotion from the First Division and he was eventually sold on.
