Manager Billy Kirkwood brought the experienced ex-Dundee defender to Tannadice as he sought out experienced players for the battle in the First Division. Shannon made his debut in the opening game of the 1995/96 season against Morton at Tannadice, and missed only one match right through until February. Shannon played in both legs of the Play Off against Partick Thistle as United made their way back to the Premier League. Shannon appeared in the first 10 games of the 1996/97 season, but the arrival of Tommy McLean as manager and the signing of Norwegian full-back Erik Pedersen saw Shannon drop out of the starting eleven and within a couple of weeks he was transferred to Hibs.
