Signed from junior outfit Ashfield in 1967, Smith was a first team regular during season 1973/74 and played in the club's first ever Scottish Cup Final at the end of that season. Smith scored three goals for United, all coming within a 6 month spell of his 15 years at Tannadice, the best being the winner in a Dundee derby in 1973, which he famously celebrated by kissing his boot! As Jim McLean's Youth Policy starting to pay off, Smith left for Dumbarton at the start of the first Premier Division season in 1975, but was brought back to Tannadice 18 months later for £4,000. Having to retire at the age of 29 due to injury, Wattie came up through the coaching ranks at United as United won the League Cup and the League title, before leaving for Ibrox in 1986, and became the most successful manager in Rangers' history.
