Stewart made his debut for United a week before his 17th birthday, playing in a League Cup Section match at Parkhead at the start of the 1976/77 season, one of two appearances made that season. By 1978/79, the young attacking right-back had established himself in the first team, missing only a handful of games, and by the end of the season he had become the teams regular penalty taker and was voted SPFA Young Player of the Year. The 1979/80 season had only just got under way when West Ham made a bid of £400,000 for Stewart, and he became the most expensive teenager in British football. Within two years Ray had won an FA Cup winners' medal, scored in the League Cup final at Wembley and completed the distinction of being capped at every level by Scotland.
