Paul Sturrock brought the Greek U21 Internationalist to Tannadice at the start of his first full season in charge of United, and the 19 year-old promptly made his debut against Hibs at Tannadice from the subs bench. He appeared 19 times in his first season, mainly as cover in midfield, and played in 15 games the following season after the appointment of Alex Smith as manager as United fought out a relegation battle with St Mirren. Venetis scored his first goal for the club in the final game of that season in a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie, and scored his only other goal in a 2-1 win over Hibs at Tannadice during the 2001/02 season, where he played 26 times as United finished 8th. After just 2 appearances in the first half of the 2002/03 season, Venetis was freed by Paul Hegarty during the January transfer window and joined up with Alex Smith again at Ross County.
