Ivan Golac gave Winters his first game for United midway through the 1994/95 season, and by the end of that season had played in 12 games and scoring 2 goals as United dropped down to the 1st Division. Under manager Billy Kirkwood, Winters became a regular in United's strike force, missing only 2 games during the season in the 1st Division. As Tommy McLean rebuilt the side the following season, Winters' formed a lethal partnership with Kjell Olofsson, scoring 25 goals between them, including one each in a 2-0 victory over Rangers at Ibrox, and he received the SPFA Young Player of the Year award. In the first game of the 1997/98 season, Winters scored 4 goals against CE Principat in the UEFA Cup, becoming only one of three United players to score a hat-trick in Europe. After a stale period at the club, Winters was involved in a player swap deal that brought Billy Dodds to Tannadice at the start of the 1998/99 season.
