Yeats made his United debut just weeks after manager Tommy Gray had signed him from Aberdeen Lads Club, and missed only one match from there until the end of the season. Yeats, out through injury with a broken arm, missed a good part of the following season under manager Andy McCall, and by the end of the season he was conscripted into the Army and based at Aldershot. New manager Jerry Kerr negotiated the regular release of Yeats for matchdays, and he missed only three matches in United's push for promotion in 1959/60. Yeats captained United on the day that promotion was achieved, as United beat Berwick Rangers 1-0 at Tannadice on the last day of the season to take the club back to the top Division for the first time in 28 years. After helping United remain in the 1st Division the following season, Bill Shankly took the giant centre-half to Liverpool for a club record transfer fee.
